SKINCARE: THE IMPORTANCE OF LIFESTYLE

This blog has come about after much encouragement from Chris my husband. When we first discussed the idea I questioned the need for it, there are so many others, do people really want my tips? I kept getting a resounding yes. I started discussing the idea further afield and got the same answer. There was a hunger from friends and clients to learn. So here we are! In this post I thought I would go back to basics. You can use the most expensive skincare in the world but it's counterintuitive if you are damaging your skin by smoking, too much sun exposure and poor diet. Sad but true.

What You Put In...

Diet...

Try avoid sugar it really is the devil. Processed foods are next on my to quit list, they are full of sugar and bad fats. There is so much to say on this, but basically put, sugar is a toxin and it breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin. Saggy skin, no thank you!

Fat is good (well the right fats) Avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds.

Water (filtered) is a miracle cure for skin, I can tell when working on a model /client if they drink water!

Exercise...

When ever I've gone for a run, I always get comments on my skin, I'm not talking about the wow you're red comments ( I get those too) Im talking about that lovely glow that comes a few hours after. Probably from going so red in the first place, but i'm not complaining. It's so worth it and never mind those addictive endorphins. Any exercise that you love will do.

Sleep...

I never really thought this was a priority for skincare until I had a baby! I mean it really has aged me! I see fine lines I definitely didn't have pre Elliot. So get your z's when you can, prioritise rest.

Sun...

We need glorious sunshine to make vitamin D and also just because it makes us happy! I try to wear a hat when I'm in the sun and try to avoid those peak hours (impossible as a make-up artist on set in summer).

High factor SPF daily! Really it's my number one skincare rule.

Obviously no smoking...

I don't need to preach on this one.

Cut down on the dairy...

If you suffer from Acne, try it! Most of us are lactose intolerant, most scientific research now says dairy is not the wonder food we once believed it to be. It's made for calves and does a pretty good job at getting them to grow really big, really quickly. It's often full of antibiotics, hormones and puss (gross)! You can get your calcium from other sources like broccoli, spinach and almonds. Cheese is the toughest one for me. I do love cheese.

But why alcohol too...

Another tough one, very dehydrating on the skin, never mind the empty calories. I couldn't give it up all together, but I do try balance it out with lots of water and I naturally tend to drink slowly, which I think helps. It's all about flushing out toxins and hydration and of course, everything in moderation!

I will be posting more info on specific conditions like acne and dehydration soon.
